David: the musician

Is this thing on?

The more and more I create songs, the less and less I think of myself as a musician.  A musician speaks with tones while I just use them to sell my writing.  Luckily, I’m a mathematician, so I can fake my way into the musical scene with a Fourier series or two.

I picked up the guitar at a friends house.  He was one of those guys who’d fall hard for a new hobby, buy all the gear, and try it once.  I shuffled through his pile of printed out tablature, and I locked myself in a room until I could play the first four bars of “Time Of Your Life”.

The first few songs I learned how to play were really difficult ones.  Girls want to hear songs like “More Than Words” and “Tears In Heaven”, so that’s what I learned.

As time’s gone on, my music has gone from intricate to delicate, where the quality of notes and chords beat the quantity.  That’s the nice thing about getting good.  Maximize your output with minimum input so you can get back to surfing the web.

I like listening to other people’s music, but not really.  “It is better to be thought a cool dude and keep your mouth shut than to present your music to me and have me pick at it.” - Me.  I’m not a musician.  I’m a lyricist.  If you sing to me about hearts torn apart or being home alone, you’re asking for a beating, son.

I guess I am somewhat serious about music.  I’m trying to figure out what emotions are evoked when you go from the relative major to the relative minor, or when you go from the root to the third, etc.  You can feel resolution in that dominant fifth, and where my low-brow poop humour fails to resonate, I can always throw a diminished chord in there to show I’m just kidding.  Kind of like the j/k smiley face of music.

“It’s a demented fifth, no?” - Diya

There are 7 notes in the dorian scale, 7 colours in the rainbow.
The 1st, 4th, and 5th colours in the colour wheel are all primary colours.
The 1st, 4th, and 5th chords in Western music are all major chords.
Coincidence? Probably.
My point? If I ever get a tattoo, it’s going to be intricately complicated.
