Truth, like gold, is to be obtained not by its growth, but by washing away from it all that is not gold. ~Leo Tolstoy
Like all dreamers, I mistook disenchantment for truth. ~Jean-Paul Sartre

Dear Alice,

I’m currently revising a song which starts with the lines, “Mama, I’ve come towards a hard, hard truth/All my youth. It took all my youth.” Of course, as a fellow song-writer was quick to point out, that song’s already been written by Mr. Dylan himself, with the powerful tagline couplet of, “Ah, but I was so much older then/I’m younger than that now.” Still, I’m pushed to write my own tune.

There are other truths to explore. Mr. Young chose a sweeter line with, “I was always thinking of games that I was playing/tryin’ to make the best of my time.” My opener, however, is filled with regret and loss. It’s set the bar high, and I’m going to clear it, one way or another.
